Garden Spells

Garden Spells by Sarah Addison Allen

Welcome to Bascom, North Carolina, where it seems that everyone has a story to tell about the Waverley women. The house that's been in the family for generations, the walled garden that mysteriously blooms year round, the rumours of dangerous loves and tragic passions. Every Waverley woman is somehow touched by magic.

Claire has always clung to the Waverleys' roots, tending the enchanted soil in the family garden from which she makes her sought-after delicacies - famed and feared for their curious effects. She has everything she thinks she needs - until one day she waked to find a stranger has moved in next door and a vine of ivy has crept into her garden...Claire's carefully tended life is about to run gloriously out of control.**

I found this book while I was trolling on Goodreads, one of my friends on there has marked it to read or was reading it. I really don't remember all I know is I saw it clicked and was ready to read it.  It's about magical sisters and their lives. I love the movie Practical Magic,  and this seemed like it was just like that!!

Claire lived by herself in the house that was her grandmothers. Her mother brought her there when she was six, had her baby sister and left them there.  She loved the garden, she used it to make a living being a caterer. Each herb or spice was special and had a special use. People loved her cooking. The only rule was you don't eat the apples from the tree. One night while she was in her garden, as she was most nights, she meets her new neighbor Tyler.  Tyler is instantly enchanted with her but she doesn't want anything to do with him because everyone leaves. Its only a matter of time when he will leave too.

Sydney is on the run from an abusive boyfriend, with her daughter, Bay. Sydney ran from Bascom as soon as she could when she was younger because she didn't feel like she was a Waverley, she felt like Claire got all the interest from her grandmother and the only way she could deal with anything was to leave and never look back. Now when she needs some where to go, its the one place she knows she will be safe. Home. It never felt like home but now that she's back and she's mending fences with Claire she feels like her life is on an upturn.

So Claire knows how to work the earth, that's her magical gift. Sydney knows how to make people feel confident about themselves. Bay just knows where things go, she knows they belong in Bascom. I think one of my favorite characters is Evanelle. She would give people things that they would need. She didn't know when they would need it but she just knew that she had to give it to them.

I so enjoyed this book. I loved the feel of it. While it was a little bit like Practical Magic, it had many things that were different about it. It is it's own story and a really good one!! Give it a try! You will enjoy it!
