The Boyfriend Thief

The Boyfriend Thief by Shana Norris

Avery James has her life planned out: this summer she'll work with a humanitarian program in Costa Rica, next year she'll graduate at the top of her class, and after that, college and medical school. Perfect, planned, total order.

The only problem: getting the rest of the money she needs for the trip before the deadline. Hannah Cohen, her biggest competition for the valedictorian title, makes an unexpected offer: If Avery can win over Zac Greeley and make him break up with Hannah before the end of the school year, a check for five hundred dollars is all hers. Faced with the prospect of spending yet another summer working as a giant hot dog, it's an offer Avery can't refuse.

Zac is nothing like Avery expected. Within his chaotic world of midnight slushie runs and spontaneous dance parties, her total order is quickly falling apart while Hannah seems poised to get everything she wants. But just how much is Avery willing to give up for the perfect, planned life?**

Avery wants everything to be perfect. So she does everything perfectly, she studies for all her classes, she sleeps the right amount of hours and she takes care of her dad and brother so they don't have anything to worry about.  She's in line to be Valedictorian next year and go to college then on to medical school. Everything is perfect, but she only has one friend, and no boyfriends. She really hates her job, but its the best paying job in her town. Her dad has been reading self help books since her mom left, and her brother has been filling the void with junk food.  When she realizes that maybe shes not going to make enough to go on her trip to Costa Rica, she starts looking for part-time work that could add to her fund. That's when Hannah offers her a task that she can't refuse.

She wants Avery to steal her boyfriend Zac. He's goofy, and he slacks off. Hannah needs to concentrate on the prize, beating Avery.  If Avery can do it, Hannah will give her five hundred dollars. That would get her closer to Costa Rica. When Avery is paired with Zac its the perfect opportunity to steal him away. Except Avery sucks at flirting and she just doesn't get Zac at all. He treats everything like a joke and it drives Avery batty. When she starts working with him though she figures out that he's actually very smart and hard working. She also notices things about him she doesn't want to notice, like how it feels when he touches her arm.

Sadly though Avery starts to crack. She's convinced that a guy she used to be best friends with is cheating on her only friend. She is starting to have feelings for Zac. Her dad has a girlfriend that's super nice and fits well with her family but Avery is jealous of the ease of it.  One day she explodes and it costs her a lot. It could very well cost her everything.

I really had a hard time relating to Avery, she's so ridged and unbending that I thought how could anyone want to hang out with her.  When she reveals why she does the things she does though, it makes so much since and I started to feel sorry for her.  Zac shows her that she can be responsible and let her hair down sometimes.  It was a trip that I enjoyed taking. Avery and Zac are exact opposites but they fit so well together that you can't help but love it.
