The Demon King (Seven Realms #1)

One day Han Alister catches three young wizard setting fire to the sacred mountain of Hanalea. Han takes an amulet away from Micah Bayar, son of the High Wizard, to ensure the boy won’t use it against him. The amulet once belonged to the Demon King, who nearly destroyed the world a millennium ago. With a magical piece so powerful at stake, Han knows that the Bayars will stop at nothing to get it back.

Meanwhile, Princess Raisa ana’Marianna has her own battle to fight. She’s just returned to court after three years of riding and hunting with her father’s family. Raisa aspires to be like Hanalea, the legendary warrior queen who killed the Demon King and saved the world. But it seems that her mother has other plans for her—plans that include a suitor who goes against everything the Queendom stands for.

The Seven Realms will tremble when the lives of Han and Raisa collide in this stunning page-turner from best-selling author Cinda Williams Chima.

This book took me a while to get into. The first 60 percent of the book was a lot of back story and however critical I am sure to the rest of the series. There were times when it got very monotonous.

However, Once the meat of the story started, you were sucked in.

We have a land, that reminds me of Skyrim. (Sorry for the allusion) There are several kingdoms that coexist under a treaty. This treaty bind wizards, the monarch and the clans of the land to very rigid laws. There was a past, however devastating, the people of the land were trying to prevent from happening again. History has taught us that such treaties can lead to a future conflict that is more devastating and evil than the past that was trying to prevent.

I am glad that this is a series as the action in the story really picked up in the last 50 pages or so. I do not want to tell you much. I think if you can get through the back story, you will really enjoy the ending.

We have a princess and a man that I am sure will be linked in the upcoming battle against the rising tide. This story is full of suspicion, love and secrets. I hope you give it a try.

Quotes:

“Well, I believe she went in to rescue some Raggers from the pits,” Cuffs said. “She wasn’t all that specific.”
“She went in to rescue — why would she do that?” Amon gripped the ironwork, studying the streetlord’s face. Was he lying? And if so, what was the purpose?

“Guess she’s kind of taken with us,” Cuffs said. “You know, the glamor of the gang life and all. Getting beat up every other day, arrested for crimes you didn’t commit, long nights in gaol, sleeping in the cold and wet. It’s...seductive.” He raised an eyebrow.”

“A vocation is not something you slap on, like a coat of paint, and change whenever you want. A vocation is built into you. You have no choice. If you try to do something else, you fail.”
