The Good Girl

The Good Girl by Mary Kubica

"I've been following her for the past few days. I know where she buys her groceries, where she works. I don't know the color of her eyes or what they look like when she's scared. But I will."

One night, Mia Dennett enters a bar to meet her on-again, off-again boyfriend. But when he doesn't show, she unwisely leaves with an enigmatic stranger. At first Colin Thatcher seems like a safe one-night stand. But following Colin home will turn out to be the worst mistake of Mia's life.

When Colin decides to hide Mia in a secluded cabin in rural Minnesota instead of delivering her to his employers, Mia's mother, Eve, and detective Gabe Hoffman will stop at nothing to find them. But no one could have predicted the emotional entanglements that eventually cause this family's world to shatter.

An addictively suspenseful and tautly written thriller, The Good Girl is a propulsive debut that reveals how even in the perfect family, nothing is as it seems.**

I read this book as a part of a book club. It's not my normal read but I am trying to push my boundaries.

Mia is a teacher, she has an on again off again boyfriend. She doesn't talk to her parents much but she spends time a lot with her friends. When she goes missing and her friend calls her mother, its odd that Eve isn't very concerned. They don't talk that often remember, so she just assumes that Mia is sick and will answer when she's better. When Eve finds out that she's not called in to work and hasn't been heard of in a few days she does start to worry. Police are called and brought in but her father, a judge, just doesn't think its anything to worry about. Mia was a wild child so this is just another stunt. Another way to get attention.

Let me say this now, her parents were rotten.. Her mom was very upset after she learned that Mia was in fact missing but they didn't even know she was gone. Her father was cold and a complete asshole through out the whole book. There was also a sister, she was a total bitch.

We spend most of the book alternating between three people's perspectives; Eve (Mia's mom) Gabe, the detective, and Colin the kidnapper. Each having very different views for the whole incident.

Gabe is trying to keep his cool with the judge, they're not on friendly terms. He tries to keep Eve abreast of all the info he can and all the while he's fighting to find Mia and figure out how she was taken.

I really felt like at first Colin was trying to be bad-ass and no doubt he was but after he studied Mia, he couldn't give her over to hired him. He took her to a cabin in the middle of nowhere and got someone to make him new identity papers. He took care of her without seeming to really care.

In addition to the alternate points of view we get before the kidnapping and after. Mia is a shell of her former self. She is withdrawn and has nightmares. She has post traumatic stress I'm sure. Her mother doesn't know what to do for her, Mia is living with them. Eve takes her to all the therapy she has and tries to get her to eat, but it really just doesn't seem like Mia cares. Oh and she tells everyone her name is Chloe.

So many twists and turns in this book once you get to a certain point. I've shared as much as I feel comfortable sharing without giving things away.  I enjoyed it but some of it pissed me off. In the end a book that makes you feel something, anything is a good book in my opinion! Have you read it? Let me know your thoughts! As always leave the author a review, it shows your appreciation!
