Center Ice by Cate Cameron
Karen Webber is in small-town hell. After her mother’s death, she moved to Corrigan Falls to live with strangers—her dad and his perfect, shiny new family—and there doesn’t seem to be room for a city girl with a chip on her shoulder. The only person who makes her feel like a real human being is Tyler MacDonald.
But Karen isn’t interested in starting something with a player. And that’s all she keeps hearing about Tyler.
Corrigan Falls is a hockey town, and Tyler’s the star player. But the viselike pressure from his father and his agent are sending him dangerously close to the edge. All people see is hockey—except Karen. Now they’ve managed to find something in each other that they both desperately need. And for the first time, Tyler is playing for keeps…**
I've had this one sitting in my TBR for a little while. I'm a fan of sport centered books, I mean really who doesn't like a hunky athletic guy? Tyler doesn't disappoint in this aspect.
I don't know why but the parents in this book really made me want to shake them. Karen's mom died and now she has to live with her dad she never knew and his wife plus their kids. Her dad cheated on said wife with her mom. Now she's living with strangers basically. The kids pretty much hate her and treat her like a pariah. She feels like her world is upside down. Then she meets Tyler when she's running. Running right now is the only thing that feels normal to her.
Tyler is a great hockey player, but he's also a giant player. He has been in this hockey league since he was 15 years old and he's slept with as many woman and girls that he can. He let the fame from playing go to his head. Now that he's met Karen he thinks he may want to try something different. He wants to have hockey and a life. His dad though has other ideas. He sees Tyler as his meal ticket. Even though Tyler doesn't live with them he's there every game and practice. He rides Tyler hard about everything that goes into the game and making it to the NHL.
Something was off with this story. Karen is 16 and Tyler is 18, nothing unusual there but it seemed like there were no real rules for either of them. Her dad told her to go to a party and unwind. She left and went where she wanted when she wanted. She cussed at her dad and step mom. I didn't hate the story but it just seemed like an alternate universe. Tyler was treated like most athletes, like he was a God. I get that Karen was lashing out because her mom was gone and she was grieving but it just seemed odd to me the way she acted and no one said anything. Her antics got on my nerves quite a bit and Tyler's dad was a HORRIBLE person. He didn't care about his son, just the paycheck he could potentially get IF he got into the NHL.
All in all it wasn't a bad book it just seemed very grown up to be about a 16 and 18 year old. Have you read this? Let me know what you thought about it! As always leave the author love in the form of a review!
