Midnight Promises

Midnight Promises by Sherryl Woods

This is the eighth in a series and I was not disappointed. In this one we get an in-depth look in to the lives of the newly wed couple Elliott and Karen. Karen is wary of everything because her ex-husband had done to her, leaving her and leaving his debt behind as well as their kids. Elliott tries to be understanding, but he comes from a strong Latino family, where the man is supposed to be in charge and doesn't get questioned by the wife. We watch them struggle to communicate effectively about everything that goes on in a marriage.

Elliott wants his wife to know that he would never ever do anything that would jeopardize their financial and marital well being. He has a hard time understanding that the past is hard to get past for Karen. When he was approached by the men in town to open a mens only gym, just like the women had done a few years ago.  Knowing that Karen would have issues with him investing in this venture he keeps it from her until he knows more about it. Only that backfired and she found out from someone else causing a rift.

We meet a few other characters in this story namely, Elliott's sister, Adelia. Meeting her and her family shows another aspect of Elliott's families traditions. Adelia is in a marriage that frankly isn't working anymore. Her husband has a mistress. Not only is there that disrespect but the mistress lives two streets away from his wife and children. Adelia is catholic so she firmly believes that divorce is wrong, this is one of the main reasons that the family didn't accept Karen.  Going through her own problems has forced her to face that sometimes you can't work out all the issues in a marriage.

The moral of this book in the end is that you have to put everything in to a marriage. It's not something that you can do half way and expect to get  the results you want. Everyone has to do what is right for them and judging someone else without walking in their shoes doesn't get you anywhere.  Please go and check out Sherry Wood's series Sweet Magnolia's.  While you can pick this book up and read it alone, you will be wondering about some of the people that have previously been talked about in another book.  Come on to Serenity and meet the ladies. I know you'll love them as much as I have.
