Prince of Thorns (The Broken Empire #1)

When he was nine, he watched as his mother and brother were killed before him. At thirteen, he led a band of bloodthirsty thugs. By fifteen, he intends to be king...
It's time for Prince Honorous Jorg Ancrath to return to the castle he turned his back on, to take what's rightfully his. Since the day he hung pinned on the thorns of a briar patch and watched Count Renar's men slaughter his mother and young brother, Jorg has been driven to vent his rage. Life and death are no more than a game to him--and he has nothing left to lose. But treachery awaits him in his father's castle. Treachery and dark magic. No matter how fierce his will, can one young man conquer enemies with power beyond his imagining?

I have been eying this author for a while now. Something about his books pulled me in.

First, I will tell you that this is a tale for the not light of heart. The main character, Jorg is an interesting young man. You have to realize something, this man is only fourteen. I had to think long and hard about this. Soon, an sudden realization washed over me. The age a boy becomes a man has changed over the centuries. The life span that most men had was extremely short. Jorg is no different.

This book takes us on a graphic journey on one's man's quest to seek revenge on the man that killed his mother and son and left him for dead. This is when the boy became a man bent on revenge.

Throughout this journey we see death, the influence of dark magic, and even manipulation on the scale unknown to most to achieve a goal.

Family means nothing.

Blood runs like water.

Magic is used for nefarious means.

Revenge is a dish best served cold and with a blade of steel.

Why? A fractured world where kings are trying to become Emperor.

Jorg is no different. He wants it all. Nothing will stand in his way.

I cannot wait to start the next edition in this series.

Quotes:

“Tell me, tutor,' I said. 'Is revenge a science, or an art?”

“There’s something brittle in me that will break before it bends.”
