After the 1st wave, only darkness remains. After the 2nd, only the lucky escape. And after the 3rd, only the unlucky survive. After the 4th wave, only one rule applies: trust no one.
Now, it's the dawn of the 5th wave, and on a lonely stretch of highway, Cassie runs from Them. The beings who only look human, who roam the countryside killing anyone they see. Who have scattered Earth's last survivors. To stay alone is to stay alive, Cassie believes, until she meets Evan Walker. Beguiling and mysterious, Evan Walker may be Cassie's only hope for rescuing her brother--or even saving herself. But Cassie must choose: between trust and despair, between defiance and surrender, between life and death. To give up or to get up.
When I was watching the previews before the last Hunger Games movie, I was reminded about this series. So, without further wait, I dove right in.
Imagine, an alien mothership appears one day in the horizon. What would you do? I think the world would panic. Yes, damn the conspiracy theories, the proof is out there!
1. Governments would wonder if the visitors were friendly.
2. We would suddenly realize how small we really are in the grand cosmic map.
3. Fanatics would try to make contact. I imagine, the rallies of the 60's will come back. Peace, Love, and Alien sex for all!
Then after a time, with no contact, life would start to normalize. Why? Humans need a routine. We are lost without of oblivious routines. We would gradually accept the visitors as a normal part of life, until they give us a reason not too.
This novel, is such a story.
1st Wave, Cassie and her family are moving her the day to day. High school at its best.
Bam! The lights go out. Cell phones..Nope! Cars...Yeah right! Oh, and planes fall from the sky.
Now, we realize that this is not the norm.
2nd Wave...a shift in the Earth's geography. Massive earthquakes and the waves wipe out the coastal cities.
Now, billions are dead and we are helpless.
3rd Wave...Terror from the sky. A virus that is spread worldwide and 98% of the population dies.
Still..we are helpless.
4th Wave...a silent killer is awoken and death reigns down from the perfect cover.
The world as we know it is done. Only a handful of people survive. Like all dystopic novels, we are left with a small hope, that we think will blossom into the world's savior.
However, this novel shows us a different side of humanity. One with a brutality, that we might see in a episode of the Walking Dead. An enemy, that has infiltrated us like a latent cancer and only now has become active.
We follow Cassie as she journeys across the war torn Kentucky/Ohio landscape. We see her life ripped apart and the one person that she finally trusts to help her, could be her death sentence.
Not only do we see Cassie, but we get to see how the alien force has mobilized and how they plan to finish off mankind, to make way for their arrival on Earth.
Several POV's are used to take us on a journey. This is classified as a YA book, but I think that this borders on a full adult novel.
If you are looking for a thrill ride, pick this one up!
Yes, I was purposely vague, as I want you to fall for the characters, just like I did.
Overall,
Until Next Time,
