Unsouled (Unwind #3)

The story that began with Unwind continues.

Connor and Lev are on the run after the destruction of the Graveyard, the last safe haven for AWOL Unwinds. But for the first time, they’re not just running away from something. This time, they’re running toward answers, in the form of a woman Proactive Citizenry has tried to erase from history itself. If they can find her, and learn why the shadowy figures behind unwinding are so afraid of her, they may discover the key to bringing down unwinding forever.

Cam, the rewound boy, is plotting to take down the organization that created him. Because he knows that if he can bring Proactive Citizenry to its knees, it will show Risa how he truly feels about her. And without Risa, Cam is having trouble remembering what it feels like to be human.

With the Juvenile Authority and vindictive parts pirates hunting them, the paths of Connor, Lev, Cam, and Risa will converge explosively—and everyone will be changed.

Neal Shusterman continues the adventure that VOYA called “poignant, compelling, and ultimately terrifying
.”

It has been a year since I picked up this book. Not from any type of a reluctance in reading it. My mind just wonders along its normal erratic path. Oopps.

So, this year, not only have I dedicated to read and not play PS4 all the time, but I need to finish all the series I have started. So, that is why I picked this one up.

First, I need to give the author credit. Neil was able to bring his reader back to the present with subtle, yet informative memory snippets. Soon, the entire story came back to me.

When we last left our team of AWOL's, all seemed lost. Plane crash, death and isolation prevailed in the lives of Conner, Levi and Risa.

Sure, the story continues and we see how a potential end game is set up, but more importantly, I am drawn to how I think the author is using this story as a platform to remind us what humanity has done over the course of history. Sure, we claim to be civilized and we would never do something so dire, and some would call evil. However, history is littered with examples of what humans are possible of when as a species or an individual, we feel threatened.  Even with the dire, exaggerated reminder, in this book, Neil shows us something else.

Hope.

No matter what humanity endures, we always find a way to restore order. Sure, the path might be bloody and hard, there is always a moral compass out there that leads us down the right path.

Conner believes he is this individual. His goal is to bring down the corrupt society that is unwinding. While, Lev is trying to find a moment of piece. Risa is trying to survive and Cam, who I have always liked since Will lives in him, becomes a bigger part of the story.

This book shows us how the group starts to come together for a final push toward liberation. Faces from the past show their ugly head and we learn part of dark secret on what and who unwinding was and will become.

I hope you pick these books up and keep an open mind. If dystopic novels are you bag of tea, then add some sugar to your cup and enjoy a hot sip!

Until Next time,
