The Magicians (The Magicians, #1)

Like everyone else, precocious high school senior Quentin Coldwater assumes that magic isn't real, until he finds himself admitted to a very secretive and exclusive college of magic in upstate New York. There he indulges in joys of college-friendship, love, sex, and booze- and receives a rigorous education in modern sorcery. But magic doesn't bring the happiness and adventure Quentin thought it would. After graduation, he and his friends stumble upon a secret that sets them on a remarkable journey that may just fulfill Quentin's yearning. But their journey turns out to be darker and more dangerous than they'd imagined.

I read this book only after I started the series on TV. I enjoyed the series, however, the book is much better. I know that television distorts a story to benefit the audience, but i am glad that the story is much better.

Quentin is an odd man. Someone plagued by something inside. Knowing he was different but not being able to place it.

Enter a school. A calling. Not a 9 3/4 either.

However exciting it might be, there is always darkness. An evil lurking ready to come out.

We are quickly rushed through years of education and mundane drinking and sex. Enter a beautiful girl. Enter another beautiful girl and you have a recipe for disaster.

When the evil arrives in the form of the Beast, I was lost as to who it was. Good thing is, there are plenty of clues to let you know.

Finally, add a fairytale that turns out to be real and we have a story that can span through several books.

The battles are real and graphic. The love is poignant and beautiful. The ending is satisfying.

Until Next Time,
