Once Upon A Prince

Once Upon A Prince by Rachel Hauck

Susanna Truitt never dreamed of a great romance or being treated like a princess---just to marry the man she has loved for twelve years. But life isn’t going according to plan. When her high-school-sweetheart-turned-Marine-officer breaks up instead of proposing, Susanna scrambles to rebuild her life.

The last thing Prince Nathaniel expects to find on his American holiday to St. Simon’s Island is the queen of his heart. A prince has duties, and his family’s tense political situation has chosen his bride for him. When Prince Nathaniel comes to Susanna’s aid under the fabled Lover’s Oak, he is blindsided by love.

Their lives are worlds apart. He’s a royal prince. She’s a ordinary girl. But everything changes when Susanna receives an invitation to Nathaniel’s coronation.

Susanna waited for her high school boyfriend for twelve years, they had a plan. he would be a marine and then when he was done they would get married and make babies.  That never happened though, when she thought he was going to propose, he broke up with her. He found the right ring but not the right girl.

He cupped his hand over hers. "I can give you want you want."

"I don't know what you mean." Her eyes blurred. "W-what do you think I want?"

"To get married."

"Not just to get married, Adam. Married to you." She blinked her eyes clear as she gazed at him. Marriage was the plan. Since their sophomore year of college.

He sighed and shifted in his sandy seat. Anxiety fueled Susanna's heart.

"Earlier you asked me what happened in Afghanistan." He reached for his shoe, slipped it off, and let the sand run out. "I met someone." His voice faltered, his boldness waned. "Actually, we met in OCS."

"Y-you met someone?" Seven years ago?

So not only was he breaking up with her and he had already essentially moved on. While she was waiting. I have to admit that I was like, OH nuh uh. I'm not reading this. I was so pissed at this guy for taking advantage of her and really leading her on for twelve years. TWELVE YEARS!  That's so long to just be with someone and then decide that you don't love them enough to marry them.

In the end its all for the best.  Shortly after the break up she meets Nate Kenneth, he comes her rescue. Amazingly she doesn't know who he really is, the crowned prince of Brighton. He's able to be just a regular guy with her and he loves it. It takes quite a while actually for her to figure it out, and by then he's her friend, a true friend. When she does, she just takes it in stride, I was actually expecting more anger at him that he had hid it from her.  I suppose she felt like it was alright since he was a prince, and he was just wanting a normal vacation.

She sees him as a friend and nothing more. Knowing that he's a prince just cements the fact that they can never be more. He would of been a rebound anyway, that's what she keeps telling herself.  Finally he decides he has to tell her of the law that says royals can't marry non-royals. She's taken aback, they aren't even dating. They've not kissed or anything in any romantic capacity. He's called home suddenly so she's sure she won't ever see him again.

Susanna gingerly opened the envelope. Her hand trembled as she removed the think card inside.

Oh my... Her heart beat wild and loud in her ears.

She didn't think she would ever see him again and now she has a chance but nothing can come of it. She realizes now that she has feelings for him. Feelings that don't matter, she's nobody and he's going to be a king! She goes though, its a once in a life time opportunity. Seeing him though proves that she loves him and for him it's like the sun has come back out.

What about that pesky law? I guess you'll just have to read this sweet and lovely book to find out what happens with that.  Life with a Royal could never just be easy. Check out this book and leave the author some love in the form of a review!!
